Each of our programs focuses on four major pillars of civic engagement: volunteering, voting, advocacy, and activism.

Youth Civic engagement workshops

Day-long workshops are designed to teach youth about the importance of civic engagement, and how they can be pillars of change in their communities.

Six-week to six-month programs are offered to teach youth about the importance of civic engagement, and to provide youth with supplementary community volunteer opportunities.

CEP offers need- and merit-based scholarships that will provide funding for our youth to increase their understanding of American government and political processes, and to acknowledge their public leadership roles. 

• Dr. Jewel Limar Prestage Scholarship: In 1954, at the age of 22, Dr. Jewel Limar Prestage became the first African-American woman to complete a doctorate in political science in the United States. This $500 merit-based scholarship award was created in honor of her, to assist students in Ward 7 and Ward 8 of Washington, D.C. interested in Political Science and related career paths.

• The President’s Volunteer Service Award: CEP is a Certifying Organization for The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA). Through the PVSA, the President of the United States recognizes United States citizens who have achieved the required number of hours of service over a 12-month time period (September 1st - August 31st) or cumulative hours over the course of a lifetime. This merit-based award comes along with the prestigious honor of presidential recognition, a personalized certificate, an official pin, medallion or coin, and a congratulatory letter from the President of the United States.

"My students and I enjoyed working with CEP. You exposed my Constitutional Law students to certain aspects of local government in which they had no knowledge about. They analyzed the various inner workings of the DC government, as well as determine how they impact them directly. In one of your last workshops, you had students research which ward they lived in, determined their ANC, and looked at various neighborhoods around DC to determine food deserts and other criteria. In addition, you provided my students with applications for the Student Election Workers for the November election.
